Florida Truck Driver Charged in Fatal I-95 Crash

Police charged a Florida man in connection with a May 9 fatal tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 95.
Jerome Kinsey, 29, of Orlando, Fla., was cited for misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle and crossing the median on a controlled-access highway. He is scheduled to appear on Aug. 23 in N.C. District Court in Rocky Mount for the charges.
Authorities said they are investigating why Kinsey crossed the median on I-95 near mile marker 137, causing his tractor-trailer to collide with two northbound trucks. One of the trucks was transporting about 6,000 gallons of used cooking oil and caught fire when the crash occurred. It took firefighters about an hour to get the blaze under control while other officials worked to contain diesel fuel and cooking oil that spilled in the collision.
John Michael Jenkins, 63, of Rincon, Ga., was driving one of the trucks Kinsey hit and was flown to the Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he died. The other driver, Lacy Downing, 65, of Winston-Salem, was treated and released from Nash General Hospital. Kinsey was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he was treated and released.

Florida Pit Bull Bites 3-year-old Girl On Face

In Port Richey Florida Deputies say a 3-year-old girl was bitten on the face by her family’s pit bull.

Authorities say the dog tried to take food from the girl while she was eating on the couch at her home just before 6 p.m. Wednesday. Family members had to pull the dog off the child.

Reports say the child was taken to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa with serious injuries.

Authorities quarantined the dog in a bedroom at the home until Pasco County Animal Services could remove it.

Pasco County deputies classified the incident as accidental.

The girl’s name was not released.

SUV Crashes into Sleeping Couple’s Bedroom in Florida

In West Melbourne Florida a 50-year-old man was seriously injured and a West Melbourne couple shaken up after a sport utility vehicle crashed into their bedroom. West Melbourne police said that a white Chevrolet Tahoe crashed around 7:30 a.m. into a single-story home in the 300 block of Tortuga Way, just west of Dairy Road. The homeowners were asleep at the time of the crash, and one of them suffered minor injuries, authorities said. ”The car was on Dairy Road and turned right into the house. There were pill bottles in the vehicle so we are testing the driver to see if he was under the influence,” West Melbourne police Cmdr. Steve Wilkinson said. There were unopened beer bottles also in the SUV, he added. “The Chevy Tahoe went into the bedroom and shoved into the bed,” Wilkinson added. A witness said the SUV was stopped in the road and then sped off unexpectedly. ”I thought he was going to do a U-turn,” she said. The driver, identified as Robert Bishop, suffered a broken arm along with other injuries and was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. He had to be cut out of the mangled vehicle by firefighters. Building inspectors will review the damage, although authorities at the scene determined that the home may now be temporarily uninhabitable.
An investigation is ongoing.

Car Crashes into Winter Park Pub

A woman was cited for careless driving early Wednesday after she crashed her car into a Winter Park pub. No one was injured in the crash, which occurred around 3 a.m. at Fiddler’s Green on Fairbanks Avenue. According to Winter Park police, employees were inside the restaurant when the car slammed into the front entrance, knocking out a column. A witness reported that the driver was on her cell phone and misjudged a curve before sideswiping the building.
Police said it did not appear that alcohol was involved in the crash.

Five Florida Children Injured in School Bus Crash

Five children were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries after a sport-utility vehicle slammed into their school bus. The Sumter County school bus stopped to drop off students around 3:30 p.m yesterday on County Road 48 near County Road 628. That’s when a Honda SUV traveling westbound behind the bus failed to stop and rear end it, troopers said. The bus was carrying 22 children, ages 4 to 11. The injured kids were taken to Citrus Memorial Hospital and Brooksville Regional Hospital. The bus driver, Denise Millett, 48, of Lake Panasoffkee, wasn’t injured, according to the FHP. Troopers said the driver of the Honda driver, Marion Giarratano, 94, and her passenger, Hester Giarratano, 90, also escaped injuries. Both live in Bushnell. She was cited for careless driving.
The accident remains under investigation.

Police Chief Dies in Motorcycle Crash

Officials in Longboat Key say Police Chief Al Hogle was killed when his motorcycle crashed while he was vacationing in North Carolina. He was 63. Longboat Key Fire Chief Paul Dezzi reported that Hogle was on an outing with about a half dozen police friends when his motorcycle went off the road and crashed about 1 p.m. Monday. Hogle was police chief in Bradenton for a year before accepting the same position in Longboat Key. Colleagues say Hogle spent much of his life in public service. He spent nearly three decades with the Sarasota Police Department, where he retired as a captain. He also served on the Sarasota City Commission. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Dead Man Found in Fort Lauderdale Waterway

In Fort Lauderdale Florida, the police are investigating the death of a man whose body was pulled from the Intracoastal Waterway near Commercial Boulevard. The man, believed to be in his 30s, had been seen drinking in the area, according to Fort Lauderdale police Det. DeAnna Garcia. Foul play is not suspected, Garcia said. The man’s identity is being withheld until his relatives can be notified, said Garcia.

Jacksonville Police Officer shoots and Kills Motorist During Traffic Stop

A Jacksonville police officer shot and killed a motorist during a traffic stop. The shooting happened early Wednesday in the city’s Arlington neighborhood. Police say Officer Jeff Edwards spotted the vehicle around 2 a.m. in an area of known drug activity. It was reported that the suspect saw the officer and ran through several stop signs trying to evade him. Police say that in the process of making the traffic stop, Edwards became “alarmed and felt threatened.” He fired his gun at least seven times. No further details were immediately available.

Driver Killed After Honda Slams into Power Pole

A 36-year-old Poinciana man was killed Wednesday when he lost control of a Honda he was driving on rain-slicked Cypress Parkway and slammed into a steel power pole.
Driver Jason Moreno was declared dead on the scene and his body had to be extricated from the 2008 Honda convertible. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Passenger Maria Esther Cruz Garcia, 45, was wearing a seat belt. She in stable condition at Osceola Regional Medical Center. Moreno lost control as he was driving east on Cypress Parkway, east of San Clemente, at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. The roadway was wet from recent rains and Moreno accelerated after passing two cars. ”The Honda was seen losing control and hydroplane across the roadway onto the north shoulder. The Honda rotated and struck a steel power pole on the drivers’ side,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a report. The report didn’t estimate the vehicle’s speed.
An investigation is ongoing.

12 Year Old Boy Killed when SUV Hits Bike

In Bronson, Florida the Florida Highway Patrol says a 12-year-old north Florida boy died after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle.
Troopers announced Tuesday that the boy had died following the Sunday afternoon crash in Bronson. FHP says Keanu Becker was not wearing a helmet when he was thrown from his bike after being struck by a Honda SUV driven by 20-year-old Elizabeth Tyler. It was reported that Tyler told troopers she had passed two other people on bikes and the glare from the setting sun was in her eyes when she hit the boy. Troopers say the boy was taken to Shands at the University of Florida, where he later died.
