Woman Claims Officer Pushed Her Down Stairs
In Orlando Florida a federal jury is deciding whether an Orlando Police Department officer pursued a false prosecution against a woman who accused him of pushing her down a flight of stairs. The April 2007 incident at the now defunct Club Paris was captured on video camera. Officer Fernando Trinidad said Jennifer Asprilla spit on him as he was trying to arrest her. The case comes down to the jury’s interpretation of the video tape. Asprilla claims she did not spit on the officer and instead exchanged profanities before he pushed her down the steps. She said Trinidad walked away without asking if she was hurt. On the stand on Wednesday, Trinidad said Asprilla stuck out her tongue as he was trying to get her to leave the club. Asprilla’s attorney told the jury the video proves her client’s story. ”When a police officer lies, he must be held accountable,” said Andrea Armas, Asprilla’s lawyer.
Asprilla is asking for monetary damages in excess of $15,000.
The Orlando Police Department said the matter is civil and Trinidad will remain on the force. He is also doing off-duty work at a local methadone clinic.
